Project

Accompanying Research for Catenary Trucks in Germany (BOLD)

Our current knowledge indicates that the German government’s climate policy objectives can only be achieved if electrification concepts for the transport sector are developed, tested and implemented on a large scale for heavy goods traffic as well. The German government therefore decided to carry out a field trial to test electric drives in heavy commercial vehicles as part of its “Climate Action Programme 2020”.

To implement this decision, the ELISA, FESH and eWayBW projects each constructed a test track for catenary trucks on a federal road and tested their operation under everyday conditions. The BOLD project provides the accompanying research to this endeavor.

The BOLD project aims to correlate the results from all three field trial projects and other research projects on the overall system of catenary trucks and overhead line infrastructure, make them comparable, and thus maximize the knowledge gained. Environmental impacts and acceptance are key topics. The results are used as a basis to develop political scenarios and strategies for potentially introducing the system. Experts from the other projects, as well as external stakeholders, are closely involved.

The BOLD project’s results form a comprehensive scientific foundation for future decisions on a large-scale introduction of the system.
