Dr. Jakob Wachsmuth

Coordinator of Business Unit Renewable Energies

Since September 2024, Dr. Jakob Wachsmuth has been Coordinator of the Business Unit Renewable Energies in the Department of Energy Policy and Energy Markets, where he has been working as researcher and project manager since 2015. He has more than 14 years of experience in scientific policy consulting for European and German clients.

His research and consulting work focuses primarily on evaluating energy and climate policy targets and instruments, in particular the Governance Regulation, the Renewable Energy Directive and its national implementations, as well as the design of support schemes, in particular the instruments of the EU Innovation Fund and the German climate protection agreements. Another focus is on the analyses and design of energy system scenarios and transformation pathways. He also conducts studies on the ramp-up of the hydrogen market and the transformation of gas infrastructures, including the regulation of renewable and low-carbon gases and quota instruments.

Jakob Wachsmuth studied mathematics with a specialization in mathematical physics at the University of Bonn. From 2006 to 2010, he was a research associate at the University of Tübingen, where he acquired his Ph.D. in 2010 (supervisor Prof. Dr. Stefan Teufel). From 2010 to 2014, he was a post-doctoral researcher at the Center for Sustainability Research at the University of Bremen. From 2014 to 2015, he was the managing director of the Smart Grids-Platform Baden-Wuerttemberg.
