Ralf Lindner from Fraunhofer ISI has been appointed to new Innovation Forum of Lombardy

The government of the Italian region of Lombardy has launched a new innovation forum, the “Lombardy Regional Forum on Research and Innovation“. It consists of a panel of experts who accompany and advise the Lombardy regional government in implementing its new research and innovation strategy. Dr. Ralf Lindner from Fraunhofer ISI is one of ten renowned experts appointed to the forum.

From an economic point of view, Lombardy is the leading region in Italy. Its economy was once strongly influenced by industry and agriculture, and today it is characterized more by a focus on services and knowledge. The region's economic strength is also evidenced by figures: Even after the economic crisis in 2008, Lombardy's gross domestic product  was about 35 percent above the EU average. This makes it one of the most successful economic regions in Europe.

In order to maintain Lombardy's economic leadership, the regional government in Milan has set up a research and innovation forum to address the impact of research, development and technology on society and the economy. The “Lombardy Regional Forum on Research and Innovation“ consists of a total of ten experts working in different countries and areas such as Responsible Research and Innovation, Public Communication, Social Innovation, Open Innovation or Technology Assessment. It is modelled on other innovation forums such as the Danish Board of Technology Foundation, the Netherlands Rathenau Institute or the British Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, which pursue similar goals.

Dr. Ralf Lindner, who coordinates the subject area “Technology Assessment and Governance“ at Fraunhofer ISI, has now been appointed to the ten-member advisory board. He comments on his activities as follows: “Lombardy not only wants to maintain its economic strength, but also to develop it in future-oriented fields such as the food sector, the manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries, the cultural economy  or in the area of cyber security. Fraunhofer ISI has a long tradition of research in precisely these fields of research, innovation research and technology assessment. I will bring the profound knowledge and experience gained over the decades to the Innovation Forum. Its main objective is to initiate a debate between innovation experts, politicians, the regional economy and interested citizens of Lombardy.“

The Lombard regional government expects the Innovation Forum to provide important input, advice and recommendations for its innovation policy decisions, for example in the case of major investments in innovative technologies, educational programs or for the transfer of knowledge from research and science to industry. Sustainable and responsible innovations play an important role in Lombardy's future innovation strategy. Here, too, Fraunhofer ISI has already carried out several research projects and is a pioneer in the field of “Responsible Research and Innovation“.
