Technology and Market Study: Overview of Technologies for Bioinspired CO2-Fixation and Use as well as of Actors in Baden-Württemberg

The state government of Baden-Württemberg has developed the strategy "Sustainable Bioeconomy". This project refers to the part "Plan B - Sustainable Bioeconomy in Urban and Industrial Areas", under the leadership of the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy Baden-Württemberg. Baden-Württemberg, as an innovative state, has the potential to establish a sustainable bioeconomy. This project deals with the technology field of biotechnological and bioinspired CO2 fixation and use, which could contribute to the development of the raw material CO2 for industrial production processes within the framework of a bioeconomy, thus avoiding conflicts with food and feed production or land use.

In this project, a comprehensive overview of the technology field of biotechnological and bioinspired possibilities for CO2 fixation and CO2 use will be provided. The corresponding technologies will be characterised and assessed regarding their scientific-technological and economic performance as well as reviewed from a policy perspective. The investigated technologies include modified, hybrid and artificial photosyntheses, the coupling of biosynthetic processes with solar-powered electrolysis or with non-biological pigment molecules for light absorption and charge separation. The current and potential competences and actors for the use of these technologies in Baden-Württemberg will be identified. Strengths and weaknesses of Baden-Württemberg are presented and recommendations for decision makers in research and development, industry, federal state politics and civil society groups are derived regarding under which conditions and with which measures this field of technology could be further implemented within the framework of a sustainable bioeconomy.
