Luis Tercero came in April 2009 to the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering (2000) at Christian Brothers University, (Memphis, TN, USA) and received the Outstanding School of Engineering Graduate Award. He continued to do graduate research on the detection of pathogenic virus particles using liquid crystals, leading to a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2003.
He received a stipend (2004-2007) from the German Research Foundation in the Research Training Group on “Surface Phenomena in Aquatic Systems and Aqueous Phases” at the Universität Karlsruhe (TH), and stayed there as a research assistant in the Chair of Water Chemistry (2007-2009). His doctoral work was in the field of heterogeneous photocatalysis. He received the Ron Malcolm Award of the International Humic Substances Society (2008) and was second in the competition “Understanding Science” hosted by the Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany (2008).
