Healthy and sustainable diets, circularity, diversity: Pathways in transition for resilient European agriculture and food systems in times of global crises

Explorative scenarios built upon the transition pathways with a deep dive on natural resources – land and water

The 6th SCAR Foresight study updates the transition pathways of the 5th SCAR Foresight study by opening their themes up again and working on their possible futures. The topics of the transition pathways are linked to a deep dive on natural resources, land and water. The transition pathways are:

  1. Healthy, sustainable diets for all
  2. Towards a “circular” food supply
  3. Towards greater diversity

The “focus areas” need to be pursued in a new context with poly- and permacrises and new game changers like high-tech innovations as well as recent geopolitical developments and European political guidelines.

The 6th SCAR Foresight has the general objective of supporting a safe and just transition (this is the vision) towards a more sustainable, competitive and resilient agriculture and food sector including fisheries, forestry and bioeconomy.

The results of the 6th SCAR Foresight activity will thus serve as an input for defining new R&I agendas, bringing new issues to the table, including new research and innovation as well as relevant instruments. The results are based on Horizon Scanning and new, open, explorative scenarios. The overall vision to move to a “safe and just” operating space, as identified in the 5th SCAR Foresight, remains as a guide.
