NTA8 / 11/07/2018 - 11/08/2018
Eighth conference of the TA network
Call for Papers until 05/30/2018
The eighth conference of the TA Network (NTA8) will be organized by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI and will take place from 7 to 8 November 2018 at the “Südwerk“ Community Center in Karlsruhe. The theme of the conference is “Societal transformations: Research object or mission of technology assessment?“ Abstracts for paper presentations or posters as well as panels can be submitted until 30 May 2018.
The term “transformation“ refers to the profound restructuring of social structures and behavioral patterns. These include, for example, changes in the areas of energy, transport, production and agriculture aimed at ecological, economic and social sustainability. But also technology- and market-driven transformative processes are called transformations, here the digitization of economy and society is intensively discussed.
Such transformations are characterized by their cross-sectional character, their multi-dimensionality, cross-sector dependencies, broad time horizons as well as far-reaching interventions for individuals and society as a whole. Therefore, transformation processes can also be the research object of technology assessment (TA): Its self-image is to generate orientation knowledge about opportunities, risks and consequences of the changes as well as to reflect on the social acceptability of the resulting socio-technical developments.
In addition to the predominantly analytical-distanced research, which primarily serves to advise political decision-makers, further questions and fields of activity for the TA arise: What role do societal transformations play in the TA so far? How can and should TA contribute to the active involvement of transformative governance? To what extent should TA adopt normative targets and at the same time exploit its critical potential for reflection?
The NTA8 conference provides an opportunity to discuss these and other questions on the relationship between TA and societal transformations and to deepen them by means of good practice examples. In addition to the determination of disciplinary positions, it will also deal with the possibilities and limitations of technology assessment in societal transformations. Further information on the planned topics can be found in the Call for Papers.
Abstracts for presentations, posters and panels can be submitted by May 30, 2018 by e-mail to NTA8@isi.fraunhofer.de. The abstracts will have a volume of 500 to 800 words for individual contributions and a maximum of 1,000 words for panels. The authors and those responsible for the panel will be informed of the acceptance of their proposals by 15 July 2018. Selected conference papers will be published later in a volume of the publication series “Society – Technology – Environment“.
