Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)

The concept of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), which is particularly prominent in the research funded by the European Union, aims at aligning the direction and impacts of research and innovation with societal needs and values as closely as possible. Fraunhofer ISI helped to develop this concept and works on its continuous further development.

Projects

Territorial Responsible Research and Innovation and Smart Specialisation (TetRRIS)

The TetRRIS project aims at integrating RRI into regional research and innovation activities and their governance. Corresponding RRI pilot initiatives are developed and carried out in four European regions to generate insights and good practices for different political and economic contexts. The four regions include Karlsruhe (Germany) as well as Tampere (Finland), Cantabria (Spain) and Szeged-Temesvar (Hungary/Romania).

Monitoring-System for RRI (SUPER MoRRI)

Within the MoRRI project, which ran from 2014 to 2018, a monitoring system was designed for responsible research and innovation (RRI) in Europe. The SUPER MoRRI project builds on this and refines the MoRRI indicators. The aim is the continued collection of data across Europe on the development and benefits of RRI and an improved monitoring system. An additional objective is to develop an understanding of the relationships between RRI policies and practices and their social, democratic, economic and scientific benefits.

Excellence in Science and Innovation for Europe (NewHoRRIzon)

How can RRI be better integrated into European and national research and innovation policy and funding? The NewHoRRIzon project develops a basis for this. The project‘s aim is to promote the acceptance of RRI within the European Union’s Horizon 2020 (H2020) research and innovation funding programme and beyond. The project partners work not only with 19 so-called Social Labs, but also with workshops and transdisciplinary conferences.

Joining Efforts for Responsible Research and Innovation (JERRI)

The two largest applied research institutions in Europe, Fraunhofer in Germany, and TNO in the Netherlands, have together designed a process to sustainably anchor RRI practices in their own organizations. Examples for JERRI pilot activities at Fraunhofer include the development of the Fordatis system to provide research data, the ethical evaluation of internal research projects, and holding a “citizen’s café”. The project aims to support the dissemination of RRI in the European Research Area.

Responsible Research and Innovation in a Distributed Anticipatory Governance Frame (Res-AGorA)

The aim of the Res-AGorA project is to develop a comprehensive governance framework for RRI.  In this way, the project aims to contribute to the EU’s efforts to become an Innovation Union by 2020 and to strive for excellent science, competitive industry and a better society without compromising on sustainability goals or ethically acceptable and socially desirable conditions. The project explores existing RRI conditions, the development in selected countries, and organizes numerous dialogues between relevant stakeholders.
