IKU 2015: Candidates have been nominated for the award ceremony on 20 January 2016 – Fraunhofer ISI advises jury
A total of 14 innovative and sustainable projects in five categories have been nominated for the German Innovation Prize for Climate and the Environment (IKU). The Federation of German Industry e.V (BDI) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Buildings and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) will award the German Innovation Prize for Climate and the Environment (IKU) for the fifth time on 20 January 2016. On Thursday the high-ranking jury chaired by Professor Klaus Töpfer announced the candidates for the award ceremony in Berlin. The decision by the jury is based on a scientific assessment of the submitted applications by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI.
Next year the prize will be awarded for the fifth time in succession and again a wide range of innovative ideas and projects about climate and environmentally friendly processes, products, services and business models was among the applications. The award ceremony will take place on 20 January 2016 at the BMUB in Berlin. The winners will be personally honored by the Federal Minister for the Environment Barbara Hendricks and Holger Lösch, member of the BDI executive board, and will receive a prize of 25,000 euros.
In addition to the awards in the five IKU categories a special prize “Innovation and Biological Diversity“ will be awarded. Innovations which serve climate and environmental protection by improving biodiversity will be honored. The IKU is funded under the National Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment.

The 14 nominated candidates for the prize are:
- Baumann Hydrotec GmbH & Co. KG (Wangen im Allgäu) developed a hydro fish lift to help fish to overcome barrages, even if there is not enough space for fish ladders. It can also overcome great differences in height.
- Clariant Produkte (Deutschland) GmbH (Munich) developed the sunliquid® process which produces cellulosic ethanol from agricultural waste material in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way.
- Colt International (Kleve) presented an innovative compact device called Clima Tower which can use energy two-fold and thus combines heating, cooling and heating domestic water in a low energy concept.
- DeVeTec GmbH (Saarbrücken) presented a compact ORC waste heat power plant to generate electricity from waste heat which is particularly suitable to discontinuous waste heat streams due to its combustion engine.
- geoKOAX GmbH and Aqua Concept GmbH (Gräfelfing) introduced an innovative geothermal probe including an environmentally friendly heat transfer fluid which makes it possible to use geothermal energy in regions whose drilling depth is limited such as drinking water protection zones and very small properties.
- HEWI G. Winker GmbH Co. KG (Spaichingen) impressed with the new construction of the classic connecting nut: 20 to 30 percent of material or weight can be saved compared to conventional norm nuts without changing application-relevant properties.
- Hobart GmbH (Offenburg) developed the twinLINE technology which has made it possible for their large automated dishwaters used in commercial kitchens to clean trays on a separate belt at the same time as the remaining dishes, thereby reducing the operating time and consequently the use of energy, water and detergent.
- Industrial Solar GmbH (Freiburg im Breisgau) developed a marketable solar thermal system based on Fresnel collectors to produce process heat/vapor and cold for industrial applications. It is marketed by a partner business model which is linked to the technology transfer for the production of the collectors on site.
- Krones AG (Werk Steinecker) successfully employed a cascaded storage tank system to realize brewing at low temperatures. Heating is supplied by the local heating network.
- LTG Aktiengesellschaft (Stuttgart) impressed with their energy-efficient decentralised facade ventilation unit FVPpulse System PulseVentilation. This device simulates a lung and breathes in and out.
- Reinhard Krückemeyer GmbH & Co. KG (Wilnsdorf) developed “RK Coil Protect“, a transport protection system made of recycled rubber tires for highly sensitive steel foil which can reduce steel reject by 90 percent.
- RWE Deutschland AG (Essen) integrated a superconductive 10 kilo volt cable, which is 1 kilometer long, into the city center of Essen in order to save surface and resources as well as transmission and conversion losses.
- Viessmann Werke GmbH & Co. KG (Allendorf/Eder) development of a micro biological process to methanize hydrogen with special micro organisms which can be used to store excess power from wind and solar energy.
- Wilhelms GmbH (Garrel) developed a production process for soil micro organisms (fungi) which is suitable for mass production. Their addition to the seeds can save large amounts of fertilizer.
