The bioeconomy is key for maintaining the EU’s industrial leadership and making the EU economy more resilient. The bioeconomy can reduce the dependency on fossil fuels while unlocking new business opportunities. At the same time, it contributes to the circular economy and supports a more sustainable pattern of production and consumption.
The European Commission has launched several initiatives that will contribute to releasing the full potential of biotech and biomanufacturing, among them the option to set minimum bio-based content requirements in specific product categories and in public procurement, to stimulate the demand and market uptake of bio-manufactured products. With the aim to accompany and support the Commission’s work on stimulating the uptake of biobased and non-virgin-fossil carbon products to support EU-based production and lead markets, DG GROW has commissioned a study to a team led by Fraunhofer ISI.
