Investigation of the energy consumption in the sector crafts, trade and services (GHD)

In 2019, around 15% of Germany's total energy consumption could be attributed to the sector crafts, trade and services (GHD). The inadequate recording of this sector within the energy statistics hampers energy industry and environmental policy related reporting to international organisations and restricts the basis for energy industry assessments and prognoses as well as energy policy decisions. Regular investigations into the energy consumption in this sector have been taking place in Germany for more than ten years, now. This is intended to improve the statistical basis for this consumption sector and to stay abreast of the need for information about the energy industry. The current study presents the results for the years 2015 to 2021.

The aim of the project was to carry out a one-time investigation into the crafts, trade and services sector for the year 2019 that would allow the continued use of the breakdown of energy carriers and application areas from the application balance created by the energy balances team (AGEB). To achieve this, a transparent method was used allowing the determination of representative final energy consumption figures. These figures were integrated into the existing application balances and perpetuated using suitable interpolation and extrapolation methods for the next application year.

The extrapolation of the interview results is carried out for 14 groups of the crafts, trade and services sector by energy carriers (electricity and single fuels) and application areas (space heating, process heat, process cooling, space cooling, mechanical energy, lighting, information and communication technology). In addition, the study contains a special analysis about digitalisation.
