PilotSTRATEGY - CO2 Geological Pilots in Strategic Territories

The PilotSTRATEGY project is investigating the storage of CO2 in deep saline aquifers in five industrial regions of southern and eastern Europe. There are plans to construct pilot plants to store CO2 in France, Portugal and Spain as part of the project. New seismic, geological and social data will be collected to document each region in detail, and feasibility studies and/or preliminary studies will be conducted for the technical planning of CO2 storage. In addition, social aspects will be examined to gauge public acceptance of the project and to incorporate important interest groups.

For the regions in Greece and Poland, the project focuses on improving the understanding of DSA (deep saline aquifer) storage resources based on dynamic simulation studies and the processing of existing and newly available data.

  1. Three on- and offshore CO2 storage sites in the three most advanced regions: France, Portugal and Spain. The construction phase (application for authorization) is scheduled to begin by the end of the project in 2026.
  2. Advancement of the development stage and readiness assessment of storage resources in the two other regions (Greece and Poland).
  3. Identification and integration of the relevant end users and interest groups for implementing new CO2 pilot storage projects.
  4. PilotSTRATEGY aims to pave the way toward a comprehensive and active development of operational storage sites by the end of the project.

The results are updated constantly and are available here.
