“Managing uncertainty”: How can we manage the digital transformation in spite of high uncertainties?

4.7.2018

The DLD-Campus conference explored the digital transformation on 3 July in Karlsruhe. In her presentation, Professor Marion A. Weissenberger-Eibl, the director of Fraunhofer ISI and professor of Innovation and Technology Management iTM at KIT, dealt with the topic of uncertainty in the context of digitalization and discussed how best to handle this.

In her presentation “Focus on the future”, Prof. Marion A. Weissenberger-Eibl explained how to minimize uncertainties with regard to decisions about the future in industry, society and politics. What is needed to start with is an analysis of the social and technological changes and then the development of visions of the future to steer and control this process. Scenarios can then be derived from these that allow room for new strategies and provide a good basis for complex decisions.

“We should all focus much more on strategic future issues”, explained Prof. Weissenberger-Eibl in her presentation at the DLD-Campus conference. “Above all, I would advise decision-makers in industry, politics and society to make use of structured Foresight processes. In this way, we can react to technological, economic and societal changes with the right tools at the right time. This means we can recognize future trends earlier, integrate them into corporate strategies and avoid unpleasant surprises due to unforeseen developments. In short: Germany would be much better prepared overall for the digital transformation”.

The international conference format DLD (Digital Life Design) has brought together forward-thinking persons from the digital sector for interdisciplinary exchanges with decision-makers from companies, government and administration, finance, science, journalism and the arts since 2005. The new format DLD-Campus is dedicated to promoting, enhancing and communicating digitalization topics at regional level. The interaction of regional pioneers in industry, an excellent university/university of applied sciences and the international DLD network aims to present the strengths of each conference location and to enable new impulses via networking with the relevant actors from other contexts.
