German Innovation Prize for Climate and the Environment 2015

16 March 2015 marks the beginning of the application phase for the German Innovation Prize for Climate and the Environment (IKU). The prize is being awarded for the fifth time this year and entries will be accepted until 22 May 2015 from German companies and research institutions with outstanding innovations in climate and environmental protection. A total of 125,000 euros is awarded to innovative processes, products and services as well as climate- and environmentally-friendly technology transfer solutions for newly industrializing and developing countries.

The IKU is a prestigious award that is presented jointly by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Buildings and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and the Federation of German Industry e.V. (BDI). A high-ranking jury selects the country’s most innovative projects in five categories based on a scientific evaluation by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI. The winners are honored at an awards ceremony in December 2015. Each winner receives a personal award and prize money of 25,000 euros. The IKU is funded under the National Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment.

As Barbara Hendricks, the German Federal Minister for the Environment, comments, “We need innovations that actively promote climate and environmental protection. This important prize will hopefully sponsor another series of successful ideas that help to realize the objectives of Germany’s climate policy“. The BDI president, Ulrich Grillo, emphasizes: “As a prestigious national prize, the IKU honors outstanding products and processes from Germany. This is also a testament to German industry’s excellent problem-solving expertise and innovative strength. Industrial companies ensure sustainable growth. Protecting the climate and the environment goes hand in hand with economic success.”

German companies, research institutions and individuals can submit their entries to the IKU 2015 up until 22 May 2015.
