Dr. Carlos de la Cruz Mengual

Dr. Carlos De la Cruz Mengual has been a researcher in the Business Unit Electricity Markets and Infrastructure within the department of Energy Policy and Energy Markets since October 2025. His current research focuses on energy system analysis, with an emphasis on the mathematical aspects of modeling and the use of artificial intelligence to support and advance this field.

He studied mathematics and electrical engineering at the Universidad del Norte in Colombia and completed a master’s degree in mathematics at ETH Zurich. In 2019, he also earned a PhD in mathematics from ETH Zurich. His dissertation explored cohomological invariants of groups in the context of analytic and geometric group theory.

After completing his doctorate, Carlos De la Cruz Mengual worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. In 2023, he assumed the role of mathematical lead of the interdisciplinary project «Ramanujan Machine» at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, which focuses on automating mathematical research processes using artificial intelligence. He later worked at EY in Stuttgart as a consultant in financial risk management, specializing in quantitative methods.
