Matthias studied Economics and International Relations at the University of St Andrews, Scotland from 2006 to 2010. In 2012, Matthias completed an M.A. degree in Environmental Sciences at Columbia University, New York City, with a concentration on the interconnection of climate and society. In 2019, he was awarded a PhD in Economics from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology for a thesis on material flows in the industrial system. Matthias joined the Competence Center Sustainability and Infrastructure Systems at Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI as a researcher in April 2013.
