Electric mobility is an important project for environmental, economic and social policy. The government’s objective is for Germany to become a lead market and lead supplier for electric mobility by 2020 and to get one million electric vehicles on its roads by then.

Fraunhofer ISI researches different factors of electric mobility in many different projects and has accumulated extensive know-how over the years. Its main areas of research include market evolution scenarios, new mobility concepts and business models, user acceptance in the private and commercial sectors, infrastructure development, roadmaps for energy storage, drive concepts with a focus on lithium-ion batteries, and the significance of electric mobility for the environment, the economy and society.

Researchers from Fraunhofer ISI are represented in the German National Platform for Electric Mobility (NPE) and Forum Elektromobilität. Together with three other Fraunhofer institutes, Fraunhofer ISI has been involved in the "Profilregion Mobilitätssysteme Karlsruhe" (Profile Region Mobility Systems Karlsruhe) since the beginning of 2016. This research alliance is one of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s High Performance Centers and receives eight million euros of funding from the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. In this alliance, relevant research partners from the region are working together on integrated mobility solutions. Their goal is to make cities and their surroundings attractive areas to live and work in despite the increasing volume of passenger and goods traffic.

Integrating electric mobility into the larger context of the transport sector is done by giving the Federal Ministry of Transport scientific advice on the Mobility and Fuels Strategy of the German government, which is coordinated by Fraunhofer ISI.

The most important research areas in the field of electric mobility include market evolution scenarios and new mobility concepts, acceptance studies, energy storage and drive concepts as well as the significance of electric mobility for the environment, the economy and society.

Market evolution and new mobility concepts

Among other things, research in this field explores what market share of electric vehicles can be expected in Germany by 2020. Analyses are made of the economic potential of electric vehicles, and supporting and impeding factors. New solutions for future mobility include emission-free cars and HGVs, assistance systems, integrating ICT and the improved use of resources.

Significance of electric mobility for the economy, society and the environment

The introduction and political support of electric mobility has many impacts on the environment, the economy and society. Different development possibilities are examined and analyses made of the supporting and impeding factors.
