Innovation system analysis for sectors in the bioeconomy for the German Bioeconomy Council

The bioeconomy stands for the transformation from a fossil-based towards a renewable resources based economy. The bioeconomy possesses great potential for achieving solutions to major environmental and economic challenges of the future. However, such a development does not happen automatically, but an appropriate policy framework is necessary to achieve ecological, social and economic sustainable path .Therefore the German Bioeconomy Council advises the federal government regarding the implementation of the “National Research Strategy Bioeconomy 2030“ and the “National Policy Strategy Bioeconomy“ with the aim to create favourable economic and political conditions for a bio-based economy. In this project, the Bioeconomy Council is supported with strategic expertise. A number of economic sectors (including automotive, construction, energy, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, ICT, engineering) are analyzed regarding their potential related to the bioeconomy, by regarding the role of actors in the innovation system, the particular hurdles for exploiting potentials exists and analyzing how competitive Germany is compared to other countries. Moreover, cross-sectoral interdependencies and potential policy instruments are identified.
