Fraunhofer ISI intensifies its cooperation with China

Press Release 27.06.2017

Following the Alliance for Innovation Research with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Fraunhofer ISI is aiming at cooperation with other Chinese research institutes. In pursuit of this goal, the Fraunhofer ISI has now formalized its cooperation with the Shanghai Institute for Science of Science (SISS), an important think tank for the municipal government of China’s largest city.

While attending the Pujiang Innovation Forum 2017, Prof. Knut Koschatzky, Head of the Competence Center Policy – Industry – Innovation at Fraunhofer ISI, was awarded an Honorary Research Fellowship by SISS director Dajin Luo in a special ceremony on 15 June 2017. The fellowship is awarded for three years and serves as a basis for continuous and regular bilateral exchange. The objective is to cultivate German-Chinese cooperation and research projects as well as to support the exchange of young scientists and foster joint publications. Together with Knut Koschatzky, the fellowship was also awarded to Prof. Petra Ahrweiler, Director of the European Academy of Technology and Innovation Assessment.

The cooperation between Fraunhofer ISI and SISS concerns the design of a modern, urban innovation system in the sense of incorporating creative forces and creating an innovation-friendly climate in Shanghai. The intention is to develop Shanghai and Beijing into global centers of innovation and to make major contributions to the Chinese government’s innovation strategy. Fraunhofer ISI was chosen as the institute with which the SISS wishes to cooperate intensively in the field of innovation system research.

"We are delighted by this award. This cooperation expands Fraunhofer ISI’s expertise concerning innovation theory and innovation policy in China", says Prof. Marion A. Weissenberger-Eibl, Head of Fraunhofer ISI.

The Innovation Forum is organized by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology Development und the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). On 16 and 17 June, numerous international participants came together for discussions under the heading "Globalization of Innovation and Renovation of Urban Functions". At the request of the host SISS, Knut Koschatzky held a keynote address on the topic "City of the future – Implications for urban innovation systems".
