Water supply and waste water disposal must be adapted to the challenges such as new pollutants or demographic and climate change. The Business Unit Water Resources Management analyzes the developments and works out measures that contribute to the sustainability of infrastructure systems. Coordinator of Business Unit is Dr. Thomas Hillenbrand.

The increased integration of environment protection technologies in processes, products and systems merges environmental protection and innovation. The Business Unit Sustainability Innovation and Policy analyzes innovation processes and policy instruments to raise resource efficiency and explores the competitiveness of sustainable future technologies. Coordinator of Business Unit is Dr. Katrin Ostertag.

Increasing interactions of societal, technical and ecological systems imply risks. The Business Unit Systemic Risks is working on altering system characteristics by innovations in such a manner that they are less vulnerable to natural catastrophes, crises or shortages. Coordinator of Business Unit is Dr. Luis Tercero Espinoza.

Efficient transport systems are indispensable for the economy and society, but increasing demand for mobility is risky for both climate and the environment. The Business Unit Mobility develops innovative transport concepts and investigates the impact of transport policy instruments. Coordinator of Business Unit is Dr. Claus Doll.
