Experience

Dr. Harald Hiessl graduated as a hydrologist from Freiburg University in 1980 and earned his doctoral degree in water resources engineering at the Technical University Karlsruhe (Dr.-Ing. doctoral degree) in 1985. He had a Feodor-Lynen Post-Doc Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Department Hydrology and Water Resources (1986/1987) and a position as Visiting Assistant Professor at the Optical Sciences Center (1987/1988), both at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ, USA. Since 1988 he is with the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI in Karlsruhe, Germany. From 1996 to 2008 he was head of the Competence Center Sustainability and Infrastructure Systems (former Department Environmental Technology and Environmental Economics). Since January 2008 Dr. Harald Hiessl is deputy head of the Fraunhofer ISI.

Work Focus

His main areas of research are sustainable water resources management with a special emphasis on urban water infrastructure systems and resource efficient clean technologies, products and services. The foci of his research are:

  • innovation processes associated with urban water infrastructure systems and resource efficient technologies incl. the analyis of obstacles to the diffusion of innovative technologies and services

  • strategic foresight and trend analyses, technology foresight with special emphasis on resource efficient technologies, scenario processes and scenario development

  • analysis and assessment of innovative technologies, product strategies and services

  • vulnerability assessment and adaptaion strategies in the context of climate change

  • conceptual design and assessment of medium to long-term corporate strategies and corporate innovation strategies in the context of sustainable development

  • evaluation of R&D and innovation programs
