BETTED: Boosting Energy Transition of ThE Dairy value chain

The BETTED project (Boosting Energy Transition of ThE Dairy value chain) aims to support the energy transition of companies operating in the supply chains of the dairy sector, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). For this, the project seeks to promote the adoption of energy efficiency measures, the use of renewable energies and the implementation of heat pumps throughout the value chain. Furthermore, the project seeks to play a significant role in reducing the dependency on fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to cleaner energy sources.

The dairy sector is predominantly organized around cooperatives, which hold the majority of the market share. Cooperatives serve as a platform for multiple stakeholders, such as farmers, processors, and distributors. This emphasizes the significance of collaboration and coordination among these stakeholders, and underscores the potential for adopting value chain approaches in this specific context.

The project aims to drive the energy transition by empowering companies in the dairy sector's value chain to embrace sustainable practices and leverage the potential of value chains. To achieve this, the project will introduce capacity-building programs and tools to guide companies in making energy-saving decisions, adopting renewable energies, and investing in heat pumps. Specifically, the project focuses on three main pillars:

  1. Establishing a capacity-building program and a dedicated community to support the transformation of organizational energy cultures. This involves enhancing the skills, knowledge, awareness, and know-how of employees regarding the role of sustainable value chains in both small and large companies.
  2. Implementing customized and user-friendly tools that engage companies operating within the same value chain. These tools are to support the adoption of energy-efficient measures and sustainable practices, considering aspects such as multiple benefits and collaboration between large and small companies.
  3. Providing policy and regulatory recommendations aimed at expediting the energy transition in the dairy sector.

The tasks of Fraunhofer ISI in the project team focus on conducting initial analyses of requirements, challenges, and capabilities of the targeted companies.
